Ford 3.5 EcoBoost Tuning: The Ultimate Guide

Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is our top pick for F-150 pickups model year 2011 and later. In terms of performance, towing capacity, and fuel economy, it’s the best gasoline F-150 engine option. The 3.5 EcoBoost engine in the Ford F-150 has a power range of 365 to 450 hp. However, other models’ twin turbo 3.5L V6 engines come in various power outputs. There’s plenty of grunt and speed right out of the box.

It does, however, leave a great deal of unrealized potential. Tuners are your best bet for getting the most out of the 3.5 EcoBoost. Here, you’ll find information on the best Ford 3.5 EcoBoost performance tuners, including how much they cost, how much power they produce, and more.

3.5 EcoBoost V6 Tuning Basics

Many engines, including the 3.5L V6, benefit from tunes, which are a popular performance modification. With a tune, engine parameters such as ignition timing, boost, fuel delivery, and so on are rewritten or modified in the car’s computer (ECU, ECM, DME). Naturally aspirated engines typically produce modest increases in power. Turbocharged engines, on the other hand, have enormous potential when tuned.

Manufacturers overuse turbo to improve reliability, efficiency, and other attributes. As a result, turning up boost and tweaking the necessary parameters is simple, and the end result is massive power gains. Tuned 3.5 EcoBoost engines can benefit from the same basic idea.

At the most basic level, all Ford 3.5 twin turbo V6 tunes accomplish the same thing. However, the methods used by tuners can differ greatly. The debate over piggyback vs. flash tunes is an important one. After diverging to discuss 3.5 EcoBoost tunes vs tuners, we’ll get back to that topic.

Tune vs Tuner

Tuner is not a word that is frequently heard in the German car tuning industry. This is more common in the American auto industry, so here’s a breakdown:

  • Modify the computer’s operating parameters using software or a file called a tune
  • It usually refers to a tuning device. a person or business that performs engine tuning

So a tune is a piece of software or a piece of software that is installed on the engine. A tuner device or a person who actively tunes engines are both acceptable options for 3.5 EcoBoost tuners. A tuner, also known as a tuner device, is merely what enables you to transfer the engine’s tune to another device.

F-150 Piggyback vs Flash Tunes

This could have been its own post, but we’ll keep it brief and to the point. Flash tunes rewrite the ECU’s programming from scratch (ECU). It gives you complete control over every aspect of your engine’s operation, including timing, fueling, and boost. Since it can actually write a new tune to the ECU, this is where the tuner device comes in handy.

However, piggyback tuners, such as the 3.5 EcoBoost JB4 tuner, do not alter the ECU’s programming in any significant way. It is the ECU itself that is connected to these tuners, not a third-party device.

However, despite the fact that they’re simple tuner devices that plug and play, they approach things very differently. Some data points are manipulated by a piggyback tune.

F-150 Piggyback vs Flash Tunes

The boost signal, for example, is tapped, and the turbochargers are instructed to run at a higher PSI. The ECU continues to believe it is using the factory-specified boost levels. The computers in today’s cars are lightning-fast and flexible.

The engine will react by increasing fuel flow and taking other steps to keep it running smoothly even if it is unaware of the higher boost. As an example, a piggyback may be used to modify other signals such as fueling by intercepting and modifying them.

No matter how you slice it, the end result is the same whether you use 3.5 EcoBoost flash or piggyback tunes. It’s not that the songs’ goals differ; it’s how they accomplish them that does.

JB4 piggyback tunes are some of our favorites, and we’ve been using them on all of our turbo BMWs for over 8 years. Flash tunes are preferred by a large number of people.

Ford F-150 3.5L V6 Tune Benefits

The increased power of the Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost is, of course, the most obvious advantage of tuning it. Other minor advantages may arise, but power is the most important. Anyway, there are a number of advantages to having a 3.5 EcoBoost that has been tuned:

  • 50-100+whp
  • 70-120+wtq
  • Fuel economy improvements
  • Better throttle response
  • Improved power band

For the 3.5 EcoBoost, the typical gain is between 50 and 100 whp with no other changes made to the vehicle. The torque of the wheels can be improved by 70 to 120 percent. Outstanding results for a single tune.

More powerful 3.5L V6 engines using 93 octane, race fuel, or E85 blends will gain the most power. Increasing the number of modifications and improving the car’s fueling and tuning will result in even more power.

Whether or not better fuel economy is a benefit is up for debate. Your fuel economy may improve slightly if your car is tuned properly. To compensate for the extra octane, most people tune their vehicles. If you put the newfound power to use, your F-150’s MPG may suffer.

Otherwise, you can expect a more responsive throttle and a wider power range. It’s important to remember that peak power and torque gains alone don’t tell the whole story. Almost everywhere in the RPM range, you’ll notice the difference.

Twin Turbo 3.5 V6 Tuning Risks

Although 3.5 EcoBoost tunes and tuners have many advantages, there may also be some disadvantages. The more power and boost you have, the more demanding your engine and turbo will be. From the fuel pumps to the cooling system, this covers it all.

The reason why manufacturers leave wiggle room is obvious. Although horsepower isn’t the only consideration, it is one of them.

As a result of this, Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost is a powerful engine with a well-tuned twin turbocharger system. As long as your setup is sound and simple, a modest tune won’t be a threat. The more you push things, the more likely it is that you’ll run into problems. Supporting mods become more critical as you increase your desire for raw power.

Best 3.5 EcoBoost Tuners

Now that we’ve covered the history of the Ford 3.5 EcoBoost, it’s time to look at some of the best aftermarket tuners for this engine. Several good options exist, and one isn’t necessarily better than the other. Sometimes it comes down to personal taste and/or who gets your business. As a result, this is just a selection of the fine-tuning options we recommend.

Best 3.5 EcoBoost Tuners

It’s important to keep an eye out for a few things, though. Always make sure you’re working with a reputable, well-established business or individual. Inexperienced users should avoid tinkering with tuning parameters because of the potential for harm. No, don’t go and ask your next-door neighbor who used to tune ’94 Civics for help with tuning your 3.5L EcoBoost.

As a final point, you’ll need a business that’s prepared to assist with future tuning requirements and developments. Whatever the case may be, we’ve listed the best Ford 3.5 EcoBoost performance tuners below.

1) 3.5 EcoBoost JB4 Piggyback Tune

We’re a little partial to JB4 tuners because we use them and enjoy them. When the BMW N54 twin turbo engine was released in 2007, these first appeared on the scene. There’s a good reason why this is a popular BMW tuning option. With this 3.5 EcoBoost piggyback tune, installation is as easy as plugging and playing.

The JB4 comes with seven different tuning maps that you can switch between at any time. A map change takes only a few seconds compared to a flash tune, which may take several minutes.

If your JB4 is still under warranty, uninstalling it before a dealer visit will virtually eliminate its existence. Keep in mind that piggyback tunes manipulate signals in such a way that the ECU displays only data that is 100% accurate.

Anyway, we’re running out of time to go over all of the JB4’s fantastic features. You can find out more about the Ford F-150 JB4 by visiting the website listed at the bottom of this page.

This is an excellent choice for the 3.5 EcoBoost if you want a simple tune with moderate and aggressive tunes. Traditional flash tunes are the way to go if you want more than 500 whp from E85 and/or upgraded turbos.

2) V6 EcoBoost Custom Tuning

For the time being, the only options are 3.5 V6 flash tunes. We’ll return to actual tuner devices shortly. Since custom tuning is a viable option, it’s critical to have a discussion about it beforehand. There are no extra charges for the OTS maps included with any of the tuners below 3.5 EcoBoost. A shop/test car is commonly used in the development of these vehicles.

However, there are variations among the 3.5 EcoBoost engines. Aside from that, some owners drive them at sea level, while others do so at altitudes of over 10,000 feet. We’re not even going to touch on the countless other variables.

To put it another way, the stock tunes aren’t tailored to your F-150 3.5L EcoBoost. They’re universal tunes that should work with any 3.5 EB engine, no matter what manufacturer makes it.

The performance and other advantages that a custom flash tune can provide are numerous. You’ll work with a tuner to get a tune that’s tailored to your truck’s characteristics, such as its weight, height, and driving conditions.

It’s a back-and-forth process, so be prepared to put in some effort and be patient. Custom tunes, on the other hand, let you utilize your engine’s full potential.

3) F-150 3.5L Twin Turbo SCT X4 Tuners

The 3.5L V6 twin turbo EcoBoost engine’s SCT X4 tuners device is next on the list. Starting at $399, you can get the device with a few preloaded tunes. 5 Star Tuning offers similar packages, including the device and three custom tunes.

For a long time, SCT has offered Ford tuners and tunes. Their products are well-known and dependable, and they’re also reasonably priced for the quality they provide. Most 3.5 EcoBoost tuners come with a wide range of features as standard. Many features, such as data logging and built-in wifi, can be found on this unit. This is a fantastic option on all counts.

4) Ford 3.5 V6 COBB Accessport Tuning

To be honest, this is the option we are least excited about. There is nothing wrong with COBB Tuning. COBB is a well-known manufacturer of tuner devices for a wide range of vehicle makes and models.

You will, however, be charged a premium because of their well-known brand and image. Starting at $600, devices get more expensive as you go up the food chain.

EcoBoost 3.5 tuners are also restricted to F-150 and Raptor models manufactured after 2017. If you have a 2017 or newer Ford F-150, and you don’t mind paying more, this is a great option.

There aren’t any distinguishing features or benefits that make the COBB Accessport worth the extra money. If you don’t mind spending more than $600, it’s still an excellent tuning option for the 3.5 EcoBoost.

5) 3.5 EcoBoost nGauge Tuners (Closed)

nGauge was no longer in business at the time of this writing. In our knowledge, the decision to shut down was not motivated by money, quality, or anything else. It appears to be related to the recent tightening of regulations governing emissions and the environment.

The nGauge company, on the other hand, was well-known for its high-quality tuners and tunes for a variety of vehicles, including the Ford EcoBoost 3.5. nGauge tuner devices, both new and used, are probably still available. The biggest drawback is the paucity of future assistance and development. Despite this, the nGauge may have some good deals for you.

Ford 3.5 EcoBoost Tuning Summary

3.5L twin turbo V6 EcoBoost is a great all-around powertrain in every sense of the word! It’s our top pick in the F-150 because of the way it strikes the perfect balance between power, towing capacity, and fuel economy.

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine comes standard with a powerful motor. Some people, however, believe this is insufficient. Thanks to an EcoBoost 3.0 tune, the engine can be quickly and significantly improved.

With only a tune and proper fueling, you can gain 50-100whp in horsepower. 3.5 EcoBoost tuner power gains become even more impressive when combined with additional modifications. Better throttle response and more power across the rev range are also likely side effects. Looking for that extra edge? It’s hard to go wrong with a song.

The 3.5 EcoBoost JB4 piggyback tuners are among our favorites due to their ease of installation and impressive capabilities. If you want to make 500+whp with heavy E85 mixtures or upgraded turbos, piggyback tunes aren’t for you.

While the SCT X4 is an excellent choice, there are some drawbacks to it as well. There’s no doubt that adding a performance exhaust to your Ford F-150 3.5 EcoBoost will raise it to another level.

Are there any tunes or modifications you’ve done to your 3.5L EcoBoost that you’d recommend? Do you have any plans to write a song?
