The performance potential of the 2.0 EcoBoost may not be appreciated as much as it should be. Due to the larger 2.3, 2.7, and 3.5 EcoBoost engines, it frequently goes unnoticed. But despite this, the 2.0L turbocharged Ford engine still manages to deliver impressive results right out of the box.

A great deal of potential is also lying unused on the table. The 2.0 inline-4 can be taken to the next level with a few simple bolt-on upgrades, producing 300+whp. The Ford 2.0 EcoBoost’s performance can be improved with a number of different aftermarket bolt-ons.

1st Gen vs 2nd Gen EcoBoost

Before we get started, let’s take a look at the differences between the two 2.0-liter EcoBoost engines. Ford began selling the Ford Edge with a 2nd-generation EcoBoost engine in 2016. The Ford Escape, Fusion, and a slew of other vehicles have adopted the technology since. It’s now the better engine for tuning and modding thanks to a few updates. The following changes have been made to the 2.0 liter EcoBoost in the second generation:

  • Twin-scroll turbo
  • New aluminum block
  • Re-designed cylinder head
  • Higher compression ratio
  • Fueling upgrades

This is by no means a comprehensive comparison of the 1st and 2nd generation engines. The majority of these changes are aimed at increasing efficiency and decreasing the torque at the low end. They do, however, help the 2.0 EcoBoost’s performance upgrades give it a little more oomph.

Generally speaking, 2nd generation engines will gain more power and torque with similar modifications. Adding full bolt-ons can increase power by 10-20 whp, which isn’t much. Adding a few simple bolt-on upgrades will greatly increase the performance of both engines. But the point stands. The second-generation EcoBoost is probably your best bet if you’re looking for aftermarket potential.

One last thing before we get to the 2.0 EcoBoost’s actual performance improvements. Many Ford and Lincoln vehicles use this engine, including the Fusion, Escape, Edge, MKZ, and MKC, to name a few. Since all of these engines utilize the same 2.0L inline-4 turbo engine, the information presented here is applicable to all of them. Of course, this does not include the distinctions between the 1st and 2nd generations that we discussed earlier.

This article essentially applies to any Ford or Lincoln with a 2.0 EcoBoost engine, regardless of make or model. However, not all parts are compatible with all makes and models and years of manufacture.. Before making any upgrades, be sure to check the fitment one more time. There are a lot of aftermarket parts available for the Ford Fusion 2.0L EcoBoost, making it one of the most popular vehicles for performance enhancements.

You may want to consider adding these 2.0 EcoBoost performance upgrades to your vehicle:

  1. Tune
  2. Intake
  3. Downpipe
  4. FMIC
  5. Fueling

There is no particular order in which you should perform these mods. Choosing the right mods to start with is a personal choice. Most people, however, will agree that the best place to begin is with a song. Nevertheless, unless you plan on making major modifications, the suggestions listed above should help you get the most out of your 2.0 turbo engine.

The remainder of this article will go over each of the 2.0L EcoBoost bolt-on upgrades listed above. In addition, we provide useful information on things like power increases, costs, and so on. This should be useful for 2.0 EcoBoost owners who don’t know where to begin when it comes to customizing their vehicles.

1) Ford 2.0 EcoBoost Tuner

For the 2.0 EcoBoost, a tune or tuner is the starting point for increasing power. When compared to a stock 2.0L turbo engine, it provides the most value for the money. The gains from a tune alone can range from 20 to 50 whp and 30 to 70 lb-ft of torque. Even with the 2.0 EcoBoost’s impressive power gains, a tune only costs $400-600.

Other performance upgrades can also be utilized to their full potential with Tunes. Without a tune, many aftermarket parts simply don’t perform as well as they could. This is due to the fact that a tune takes into account the increased airflow, fueling, and so on.

The 2.0 EcoBoost has fewer tuning options than some of the other EcoBoost engines. There are, however, still a large number available. Any 2.0 EcoBoost tuner worth its salt will come from an established, reliable company. If this is the case, the song that’s right for each person will be different. If you plan on swapping out flashes or maps in the future, you should look for a tune that supports it well.

Again, the tune that works best for you may be different for someone else, and there are many different ways to tune your guitar. In spite of this, we believe there are a few excellent tuners for the 2.0 EcoBoost, such as:

A guide for 2.0L EB tuning will be available soon, as there is a lot to cover. Off-the-shelf (OTS) tuners, such as the ones listed above, are preloaded with tunes. In order to actually flash the tune, you’ll need a device and some way to do it. You may want to think about custom 2.0 EcoBoost tuning in the future if you want your car to perform better.

2) 2.0L EcoBoost Performance Intake Upgrades

Adding both a tune and an intake system is quite common. It makes sense because more airflow is required to add boost and power. The Ford 2.0’s factory intake, on the other hand, is quite efficient out of the box. A 2.0 EcoBoost performance intake can produce small power gains of 3-7 horsepower. With aggressive tuning and full bolt-ons, you can make more power.

2.0L EcoBoost Performance Intake Upgrades

With only a conservative tune and no other modifications, the stock intake can usually handle the air-flow requirements. These situations may only result in a small increase in power for the 2.0L EcoBoost. Those who run a tune, downpipes, FMIC, better fueling, and so on will see the most power gains from an intake upgrade.

Nevertheless, a new intake system adds some incredible turbo and induction noises to the car’s character. Even if it doesn’t make any difference in performance, installing an intake system improves the car’s appearance and sound. Intake upgrades not only improve performance, but they also improve the engine bay’s aesthetic appeal.

2.0 Inline-4 Open vs Closed Intakes

There are numerous names for performance intakes. Others call them cold air intakes, performance intakes, or simply air filter upgrades. Intakes on turbocharged vehicles, such as the Ford 2.0 EcoBoost, can either be open or closed systems.

The engine bay is open to the open intake, so the term “open intake” refers to that. With a closed intake system, air is drawn into a box, and a filter is hidden within. A little bit warmer air is drawn in through the open intakes because of the heat generated in the engine compartment. A turbo engine, on the other hand, is largely unaffected by this.

Because of the turbos, the engine generates a great deal of heat. A water-to-air intercooler completes the cooling process. In other words, the intercooler’s ability to cool the charge air is largely unaffected by the temperature at the intake.

We prefer turbo engines with open intakes because they let in more air. The noise from the turbo and induction will be increased as well. Most 2.0L turbo EcoBoost engine intakes are going to perform similarly in the end. Look for an air filter from a reputable company like S&B or K&N that has a good reputation.

3) Ford 2.0 EcoBoost Downpipe Upgrades

One of our favorite turbo engine upgrades is a downpipe (DP) upgrade. The downpipe connects to the turbocharger directly. It’s the most critical part of the post-turbo exhaust system. Upgrades to the 2.0 EcoBoost downpipe’s power output will be greater than any other part of the exhaust system.

Power and performance are harmed by back-pressure behind the turbocharger. As you get closer to the turbos, the more power you lose due to back pressure. A large catalytic converter is used in the stock Ford 2.0L downpipe. It’s great for the environment, but it’s a disappointment in terms of performance.

The benefits of upgrading the 2.0 EcoBoost downpipe go far beyond increased power. These are a few of the advantages:

  • 5-15whp (10-20wtq)
  • Quicker turbo spool
  • Safer/healthier for turbo and engine
  • Louder exhaust

The gains in power and torque from a DP swap are substantial. More low-end torque is produced by a turbocharger that spins up more quickly, giving you more power behind the wheel. It’s also better for the engine in general if you can reduce the back-pressure.

It has the potential to lower EGTs while also reducing engine and turbo stress. That’s why an upgraded downpipe is a great mod for the 2.0L EcoBoost, especially when combined with a louder but not obnoxiously loud exhaust.

Ford 2.0L EB Catless vs High-Flow Catted DP

With a downpipe, the primary objective is to reduce back pressure immediately after the turbo. With more power comes faster spooling times, lower EGTs, and other benefits. The least amount of restriction, and thus the least amount of back pressure, will be provided by a catless downpipe. The most effective downpipes for 2.0 EcoBoost engines are those that do not use catalytic converters.

Catless downpipes, on the other hand, are technically illegal and emit a stronger raw exhaust odor. Options with high-flow catted hoses can be useful in this situation. They’ll still have the same advantages as a downpipe without cats. Just a smidge less so. of a degree. A high-flow 2.0 EcoBoost downpipe will lose 3-5 horsepower compared to a catless setup.

High-flow downpipes with cats, on the other hand, can be prohibitively expensive. This is mainly because cats are expensive to produce. Also, even though visual and actual emissions testing for a high-flow DP should pass, the EPA still views them as illegal.

4) 2.0 Turbo Inline-4 FMIC Mods

Ford 2.0 EcoBoost engines can be further enhanced with the addition of front-mounted intercoolers. Even with a mild tune, the factory intercooler performs admirably. However, as soon as you start adding boost, the 2.0L FMIC is completely depleted.

2.0 Turbo Inline-4 FMIC Mods

As IATs rise above standard levels, the engine begins to soak up heat. Heat soak is when the turbo is operating at such a high temperature that the intercooler is unable to effectively cool the charge air. To avoid pre-detonation, the engine adjusts the ignition timing (plus hot air is less dense). The point is that heat soak wastes a significant amount of energy.

The FMIC upgrade will, however, only add a small amount of peak power. In fact, the greatest benefit comes from having a more reliable engine that can handle multiple pulls, track days, and canyon runs without breaking down. The following are some advantages of upgrading to a 2.0 EcoBoost performance intercooler:

  • 5-10whp (similar torque)
  • Consistent performance
  • Reduced chance of pre-detonation

An upgraded intercooler may only provide 5-10whp more on glory runs. However, after repeatedly hammering the vehicle and engine, massive power loss can be avoided. It’s not impossible to lose 10, 20, or 30 whp with a stock intercooler.

Best 2.0 EcoBoost Intercooler Upgrades

There are a number of good options for upgrading the Ford 2.0L turbo engine’s FMIC:

  • Steeda Front Mount Intercooler (for Ford Fusion)
  • Garrett FMIC (for Ford Focus ST)
  • CX Racing FMIC (for Ford Escape)

We simply do not have the room to list all of the possibilities. Because the 2.0L Ford EcoBoost engine comes in so many different car models and isn’t available on all of them, things get a little tricky. Soon, we’ll have an intercooler post where we can go into greater detail about the various options available on the market.

5) Ford 2.0L Fueling (E85, Race Gas, Methanol)

This is an important subject, but we won’t devote as much time to it. If you want to get the most out of your 2.0 EcoBoost engine, make sure you use high-quality fuel. It also aids in lowering the likelihood of engine knocks, amongst other advantages.

At a bare minimum, we advise using 91 or 93 octane fuel. Access to higher quality pump fuels is always preferred. Octane is a favorite fuel for turbocharged engines because it reduces the likelihood of knocking. As a result, you are free to use higher levels of boost and power.

E85 or methanol injection is an option for those who want to get the most out of their engines in terms of performance and longevity. For now, we’ll stick with E85 and methanol injection instead of race gas.

2.0 EcoBoost E85 Fueling

To sum it up, we suggest using an E85/propane blend in conjunction with a custom tune. E30 fueling, as opposed to regular pump fuel, will have significant advantages. The octane rating of ethanol fuel is astoundingly high; full E85 has an octane rating of around 108. Of course, if you’re only using E30, your effective octane rating will be low.

It’s still much better than 93 octane, though. E85 has a cooler burn and requires more fuel to be injected than regular gasoline. As a result, the engine is more content and less prone to knocks. With more aggressive ignition timing and increased boost, the 2.0 EcoBoost will produce more power. With the right tune, an E30 can produce an additional 10-15 hp. Upgraded turbos and other significant modifications can result in significant increases in power.

Ford EcoBoost Methanol Injection

Using methanol injection as a fuel is also a viable choice. Nevertheless, because it utilizes a completely different system, it is not suitable for use by beginners. This option has everything you’ll need, including a water-methanol injection kit. You’ll also need to get methanol and prepare a solution of it in water. We’ll go into more detail about this in the future.

The fact remains that methanol is a highly explosive and high-octane fuel. It’s similar to E85 in that it offers similar advantages, but it has one major advantage over E85. The fueling system has to deal with a lot more stress when running on E85.

The use of methanol reduces demand on the fuel system because it has its own tank, pump, etc. The increase in power is on par with running an E30 blend, if not a little more so.

How Much Power Can the 2.0 EcoBoost Make?

The modifications listed above are considered complete bolt-ons in the BMW community (FBO). FBO can mean many different things to different people, but for the purposes of this discussion, we’ll use the definition above. Big power gains on a turbo car are usually achieved through the use of a tune, intake, downpipe, FMIC, and high-quality fueling.

These modifications increase the Ford 2.0 EcoBoost’s power and torque to about 300-320whp and 340-360lb-ft, respectively. Although the turbo engine is small, it makes plenty of power. It’s also more than enough for the majority of people.

Of course, the 2.0 EcoBoost’s performance can be increased with an upgraded turbo and other modifications, but those become prohibitively expensive. The cost of turbo upgrades is high, and as soon as you start adding fueling upgrades, internal upgrades, and so on, the price soars.

Ford 2.0 EcoBoost Performance Upgrades Summary

Because of the larger twin turbo V6 EcoBoost engines, the 2.0L EcoBoost is often overlooked. The 2.0-liter inline-4, on the other hand, is a strong performer with a lot of aftermarket options. In fact, the 2.0 EcoBoost can make 300+whp and 350+wtq for less than $2,000 with a few simple bolt-on upgrades.

The 2.0 EcoBoost’s 20-50whp gain from a tune is a great place to start when looking to improve performance. It’s also a good starting point for adding performance-enhancing accessories. The advantages of downpipe and FMIC upgrades go far beyond increased power.

The 2.0L EcoBoost performance intake upgrades are also a good option, but they don’t provide as much power as some of the other modifications.

A high-quality fuel system is critical if you’re going for maximum performance from your turbo inline-4. Even with 91 or 93 octane, however, poor fueling is still occurring. To maximize the 2.0 EcoBoost’s performance, consider using e85, race gas, or water-methanol injection.
